Sony Announces End of Physical Video Game Releases for PS5 and Beyond

As the gaming giant prepares to shift to an all-digital platform, CGC's authentication, grading, and encapsulation services are more important than ever to the video game world.

In an extraordinary turn of events, Sony has announced that it is phasing out the production of physical disc games for its line of PlayStation consoles. Games releasing in January 2028 and beyond will only be available as digital downloads, with no physical media option available for purchase.

“This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs,” said a company representative in the official news release published on July 1, 2026. “This transition will enable us to align more closely with how most of our community prefers to access and play games today.”

The announcement comes on the same day as another critical announcement, in which Sony announced the closure of the PlayStation Store on PS3 and the PS Vita, two of the company’s flagship video game consoles from the seventh generation.

Sony released its first video game console, the PlayStation 1, in North America in 1995. Despite going through a difficult production period, the PlayStation became the catalyst for Sony’s rise to power in the video game industry. Its successor, the PlayStation 2, remains the highest-selling video game console with more than 160.6 million units sold since its initial release in 2000. The PlayStation 3, 4, and 5 have also received critical acclaim.

Physical video game media has been a widely discussed topic throughout the last decade. With the rise of streaming platforms, digital releases of video games, movies, and other media have become more common, with some providers opting to forgo releasing their content in any physical form at all, raising questions about media ownership. Now, with Sony announcing the end of physical disc releases, gamers across the world are looking for ways to preserve their existing game collections.

"This is unsettling news for gaming enthusiasts and collectors who prefer physical media," said Kenneth Thrower, Director of Grading at CGC Video Games and CGC Home Video. "However, as we have seen with movies and music in recent years, discontinuing physical media only further drives the desire to collect it. I have a feeling we will see the same increased demand with video games. Whoever takes the reins with physical production will have that market segment mostly to themselves."

Third-party grading has become a safe and efficient way for gamers and collectors to keep their video game collections secure and preserved for decades to come. Consider submitting your favorite PlayStation games to CGC for expert grading, authentication, and encapsulation — we ensure the authenticity of your games, then encapsulate them in our industry-leading holder, helping preserve its condition and value.
