Inspired by producer Tokuro Fujiwara's 1989 horror game Sweet Home, this single-player survival horror game was originally released in Japan under the name Biohazard. Issues with trademarks forced Capcom to change the name for their English-speaking Western audience, birthing the Resident Evil franchise as we know it today.
In the first installment, gamers played as one of two members of an elite task force: Chris Redfield or Jill Valentine. The task force members are sent into the fictional Arklay Mountains to investigate the disappearance of other team members in the region. Players eventually get separated from one another and are stranded in a mysterious mansion, and they must attempt to escape an infestation of zombies and other monsters along the way.
Universally praised for being one of the most influential video games ever made, Resident Evil quickly became an international best-seller upon release. At the time, it was the highest-selling PlayStation game on the market. It is credited with being a pioneer in the survival horror genre, as its popularity led to a renewed interest in zombie-based storytelling through video games, movies, TV shows, books, comics, and more. By the end of 1997, a little more than a year and a half after its release, Resident Evil was a bona fide hit. The game had sold around 4 million copies across the globe, grossing more than $200 million.
