CGC Video Games Grades Sealed Marvel vs. Capcom 2 Promo

The sealed promotional copy of the popular fighting game is one of the earliest releases of the PlayStation 2 port.

CGC Video Games™ recently certified one of the holy grails of PlayStation 2 games — a sealed Marvel vs. Capcom 2 (2002) Promo Copy graded CGC 9.8 A+. You heard that right — Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is a valuable game on its own, but finding a sealed promotional copy in pristine condition is nearly unheard of!

Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is considered to be one of the greatest fighting games of all time. Originally released as a Japanese-exclusive arcade game in 2000, Marvel vs. Capcom 2 received critical acclaim for its 2.5D graphics, enjoyable gameplay and diverse character roster. As a result of its success, Marvel vs. Capcom 2 enjoyed several re-releases on various sixth and seventh generation consoles, including the PlayStation 2, Xbox, Dreamcast, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and more.

The PlayStation 2 port of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 was released in the United States in November 2002. Unfortunately, Capcom lost the rights to Marvel’s characters during this release window, so the PlayStation 2 and Xbox ports of the game saw limited print runs. Because of the game’s popularity and its rarity due to a limited release, Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is valuable to collectors and commands a premium.

The Marvel vs. Capcom 2 that was graded by CGC Video Games is a special example of the game. This copy is a promotional copy, indicated by the hole punch going through the UPC barcode on the back of the game case. Promotional copies of video games were given to retailers, reviewers and other insiders to promote the game before it was released to the public. Because these were given out before the game’s official public release, promotional copies of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 are considered the earliest releases of the PlayStation 2 port.

“Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is a must-have in any PlayStation 2 collection, but a promo copy of the game is even more desirable,” said Jason Brassard, Senior Grading Finalizer for CGC Video Games. “We are honored to have graded such a rare example of gaming history, especially one in such fantastic condition.”
