Mortal Kombat Graded by CGC Video Games Stands Out in Heritage Auctions Sale

The sealed Mortal Kombat for the Sega Genesis is graded CGC 9.8 A++, one of the highest grades possible on the CGC Video Games Grading Scale.

A sealed Mortal Kombat graded by CGC Video Games™ stood out amid the competition in a recent Heritage Auctions sale. The fan-favorite fighting game was just one of the many CGC-certified video games to be offered in Heritage’s Ages of Sega Video Games Showcase Auction, which ended on April 4, 2024.

The sealed Mortal Kombat for the Sega Genesis (1993) graded CGC 9.8 A++ (lot 80019) realized $5,000 in the auction. The Sega Genesis port of the 1992 arcade classic is revered as one of the key titles of gaming history because its violent graphics helped prompt the establishment of the Entertainment Software Ratings Board (ESRB) in 1994. In addition, the Sega Genesis port of Mortal Kombat beat the sales numbers of its competitor — the more censored Super Nintendo release of Mortal Kombat — marking a pivotal turning point in the Console Wars of the 1990s.

Other CGC-certified Sega games in the auction included:

  • a sealed Skeleton Krew for the Sega Genesis (1995) graded CGC 9.2 B+ (lot 80027) that realized $1,062
  • a sealed RoboCop 3 for the Sega Genesis (1993) graded CGC 9.8 A+ (lot 80024) that realized $687
  • a sealed Arrow Flash for the Sega Genesis (1990) graded CGC 9.8 A++ (lot 80005) that realized $512
  • a sealed Captain America and the Avengers for the Sega Game Gear (1993) graded CGC 6.5 A (lot 80039) that realized $500
