The Story Behind a Sealed Super Mario World Certified by CGC Video Games
Collectors often hope to be lucky enough to find a valuable rarity at places like yard sales and thrift stores. And sometimes it happens — a fortunate collector stumbled upon a sealed copy of Super Mario World for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System at a local estate sale, along with a complete-in-box Super Nintendo console, a sealed Super Nintendo controller and other video game materials. Talk about a find!
After purchasing the game and its components, the collector submitted the sealed Super Mario World to CGC Video Games™ for certification. It received a grade of CGC 9.4 A and is currently being offered by Heritage Auctions in their April 2023 Video Games Signature Auction. (A week before the April 20-22 auction, bidding had already exceeded $35,000.)
Super Mario World is the best-selling title for the Super Nintendo. Released to North America in 1991, the newest Super Mario title kept many of the elements that made the Mario series familiar while introducing new mechanics that kept gameplay fresh. Some of these new gameplay features included the introduction of Mario’s dinosaur sidekick, Yoshi. The game also featured new power ups, levels and more.
Sealed and complete-in-box copies of Super Mario World are exceedingly rare, especially in high grade. Although Super Mario World was a launch title and the best-selling game on the Super Nintendo, most copies did not come with their own box, since the cartridge came packed with the console. Standalone copies are hard to find. Additionally, finding a boxed copy of Super Mario World in excellent condition is difficult because the boxes are easily damaged.
About the variant
Super Mario World has several production variants. This particular copy is the Made in Japan, USA variant.
Made in Japan
"Made in Japan" specifies the game's country of production. Most Super Nintendo games were manufactured in Japan regardless of language, with the phrase "Made in Japan" printed either on the back or on the side of the box for identification.
USA
"USA" refers to the game's USA code. Super Nintendo games that were produced for the US market received a USA code, which is often printed on each label of the game's components. The USA code can be found on the inside flaps of the box, the front label of the cartridge, the cover of the manual and on most inserts.
