Two classic games certified by CGC Video Games™ dominated the competition in a recent Heritage Auctions sale. Heritage’s Tuesday Video Games Mini-Boss Select Auction ended on April 4, 2023.
The top-selling video game in the auction was a sealed Super Mario Bros. 3 for the Nintendo Entertainment System (1990) graded CGC 9.4 A+ (lot 66049). The third entry in the Super Mario series returned the series to its roots with a fun and engaging side-scrolling adventure while also introducing new mechanics and gameplay experiences that eventually became series staples. One of the best-selling NES titles upon release, Super Mario Bros. 3 is now one of the most iconic video games ever produced. This example realized $5,200.

Meanwhile, a sealed The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Collector’s Edition for the Nintendo 64 (1998) graded CGC 9.4 A++ (lot 66090) realized $4,800, the second-highest result in the auction. The Collector’s Edition of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was a pre-order exclusive, and demand was so strong that retailers had to stop pre-selling the game before the cutoff date. Because of the limited number of copies distributed, the Collector’s Edition is extremely rare and valuable to collectors.
