Sega Rarities Certified by CGC Video Games Offered in Heritage Sale

The auction focuses on games from Sega's variety of consoles, including the Sega Master System, the Sega Game Gear and the Sega Genesis.

Dozens of video games from Sega that are certified by CGC Video Games™ are being offered by Heritage Auctions in an ongoing sale. Online bidding is already underway for Heritage’s The Ages of Sega Showcase Auction, which is set to end on April 27, 2023.

Leading the CGC-certified games in the sale is a sealed Sonic the Hedgehog for the Sega Game Gear (1991) graded CGC 9.0 A+ (lot 80142). This is the first Sonic the Hedgehog for the Game Gear to be offered by Heritage Auctions. Although the base game is similar to the Genesis version, Sonic for the Game Gear featured different levels to give players a fresh experience. 

The Sega Game Gear was Sega’s attempt at a portable handheld video game console. It was released in North America in 1991 to directly compete with Nintendo’s Game Boy, Atari’s Lynx and NEC’s TurboExpress. The Game Gear shared most of its library with the Sega Master System, and it could even play Master System games with the use of an adapter. Classics such as Sonic the Hedgehog contributed to the console’s minor success, though it didn’t come close to achieving the sales number that Nintendo’s Game Boy console achieved.

  • a complete-in-box Sonic the Hedgehog for the Sega Genesis (1991) graded CGC 9.2 (lot 80094)
  • a sealed Team USA Basketball for the Sega Genesis (1992) graded CGC 9.6 B+ (lot 80103)
  • a sealed Castle of Illusion for the Sega Game Gear (1991) graded CGC 8.0 A (lot 80126)
  • a sealed Ecco the Dolphin for the Sega Genesis (1992) graded CGC 9.4 B+ (lot 80039)
  • a sealed Paperboy for the Sega Master System (1990) graded CGC 9.4 A++ (lot 80007)
  • a sealed Columns for the Sega Master System (1990) graded CGC 9.6 A++ (lot 80001)
